What is Medicare Insurance?

  • Federal health insurance program primarily designed for people aged 65 and older
  • Also available to certain individuals under 65 with qualifying disabilities or conditions
  • Helps cover a wide range of healthcare services, but does not cover everything
  • Understanding how the program works is an important first step in choosing the right coverage

The Different Parts of Medicare

Medicare is divided into unique parts, each covering different types of healthcare services.

Part A Hospital

Part A — Hospital Coverage

Part A covers the costs associated with inpatient care and certain facility-based services.

  • Inpatient hospital stays
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice care
  • Some home health care
  • Premium-free for most people who paid Medicare taxes while working
  • Subject to a deductible per benefit period for hospital stays
  • Extended hospital stays (beyond 60 days) and skilled nursing stays (beyond 20 days) have daily coinsurance costs
Part B Medical

Part B — Medical Coverage

Part B covers outpatient medical services, preventive care, and medically necessary supplies.

  • Doctor visits and outpatient care
  • Preventive screenings and services
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Comes with a monthly premium (amount may vary based on income)
  • Subject to an annual deductible; after that, you typically pay 20% coinsurance for most covered services
  • Some preventive services are covered at no additional cost
Part C Medicare Advantage

Part C — Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide all of your Part A and Part B benefits through a single plan, and many include benefits not covered by Original Medicare.

Part D Prescription Drugs

Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage

  • Helps cover the cost of prescription medications
  • Offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare
  • Each plan has its own list of covered drugs (formulary)
  • Costs, covered medications, and pharmacy networks vary by plan
Medicare Supplement

Medicare Supplement Insurance: Medigap

Medicare Supplement insurance — commonly called Medigap — is not a standalone coverage option. It is a private insurance policy designed to work alongside Original Medicare, helping pay for some of the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t fully cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. For many people, pairing Original Medicare with a Medigap plan helps reduce out-of-pocket costs and provides more predictability in what they pay for covered services.

  • Plans are standardized and labeled by letter (e.g., Plan G, Plan N)
  • The difference between companies comes down to premium cost and customer service
  • Premiums may vary between insurance companies for the same plan letter
  • Does not include prescription drug coverage — a separate Part D plan is needed
  • Only available to those enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A & B)
  • Cannot be used with a Medicare Advantage plan

Important Enrollment Periods

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Your Initial Enrollment Period is your first opportunity to sign up for Medicare. It’s a one-time window built around your 65th birthday, and enrolling on time helps you avoid potential late enrollment penalties.

  • Lasts 7 months total
  • Begins 3 months before the month you turn 65
  • Includes your birthday month
  • Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65
  • This is the time to enroll in Part A, Part B, and additional coverage

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

The Annual Enrollment Period is the main window each year when you can make changes to your Medicare coverage. Even if you’re satisfied with your current plan, it’s worth reviewing your options — benefits, costs, and covered medications can change from year to year.

  • Runs from October 15 through December 7 every year
  • You may switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or vice versa
  • You may join, switch, or drop a standalone Part D prescription drug plan
  • Any changes made during AEP take effect on January 1 of the following year
  • No health questions or medical underwriting for Medicare Advantage or Part D changes during this period

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)

The MA OEP is a lesser-known enrollment window that gives current Medicare Advantage enrollees one additional opportunity to make a change early in the year.

  • Runs from January 1 through March 31 each year
  • Available only to people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan
  • You may drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (and enroll in a Part D plan)
  • Changes take effect the first of the month after the plan receives your request
  • You can only make one change during this period

Medigap Open Enrollment Period

This is a one-time, 6-month window that is especially important for anyone considering a Medicare Supplement plan. During this window, insurance companies cannot deny you a policy or charge you more because of current or past health conditions.

  • Begins when you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B
  • Lasts 6 months from your Part B effective date
  • Guaranteed acceptance — no health screenings or medical underwriting
  • Outside of this window, insurers may deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on health
  • Enrolling during this window gives you guaranteed acceptance, which may not be available later

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Special Enrollment Periods allow you to make certain Medicare changes outside of the regular enrollment windows when you experience qualifying life events.

  • Triggered by events such as moving to a new area, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy)
  • Rules and timeframes vary depending on the type of qualifying event
  • A licensed agent can help you determine if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period
